GSH Group has a clean, green and safe fleet, according to a latest review from the Energy Saving Trust. Following the trust’s Green Fleet Review, GSH’s van and car fleets are predominantly Euro 3 or 4 emission standard and its cars are largely NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) 4 or 5 rated – and therefore considered to be safe and more environmentally friendly.  The Euro standards for toxic emissions are a measure of the pollution produced, whilst the NCAP is a benchmark of the safety of new vehicles.

In 2007, all GSH directors exchanged their existing company cars for environmentally friendly hybrid models and last year, the firm reduced its CO2 consumption by 14,305 tonnes for its UK clients.
Neil Murray, GSH managing director, said that the review highlighted the proactive approach that the firm took “as well as the importance we place on both environmental, and health and safety issues.”

The Future of FM!
Facilities Recruitment Limited one of the leading providers of recruitment and HR services to the UK FM industry, hosted their sixth annual seminar looking at the future of the FM industry. The seminar was held at Tower 42 the award winning venue which FRL have been closely involved with for many years.

The theme of the day was to establish what the Olympics coming to London in 2012 would mean to the FM industry; how the FM industry cope with the demands of climate change and finally how the industry is seeing a push towards greater innovation in property and Fm management including globalised service provision.

Five prestigious note speakers gave dynamic and insightful presentations but it was the input from the 50 odd delegates who were all senior executives representing a varied cross section of service providers as well as in-house FM operations that gave the seminar a unique real time view of today’s industry.

The seminar was opened by James Cracknell, the twice-Olympic champion, Daily Telegraph journalist and TV broadcaster. James gave a fantastic insight into the dedication and focus required to win at the Olympics and how the London games can only be a success if the City and Country provide the passion and determination to make them a success. Regarding the focus, it was interesting to hear of the fact that his crew trained to such an extent that they felt that they would still win even if they produced their worst performance on the day. How many companies in FM adopt the same attitude in ensuring the service delivery promised in the SLA is that achievable?

Professor Michael Mainelli addressed the delegates regarding the effects of Climate change and apologised for being the doom merchant following such an inspiring speech by James. Michael has spent the last few years studying the impact of climate change and the economics of it. Although not a scientist, he has held the meetings with Al Gore and has a realistic view of the causes, effects and impact. The bottom line he gave was that the main effects will impact by 2055, at which stage the predictions are for increased see levels will have catastrophic effects for the UK. Despite government assurances there is little evidence of their commitment to resolve the issues. He felt that the recent marketing ploys of large commercial organisations were just that ploys. None of them really can significantly make an impact through carbon trade offs and that it will only be through large-scale input through commerce will drive an effective change. He agreed to a posed delegate question that possibly the FM industry could be held accountable for the climate impact of their organisations. He summarised his presentations with advising the F industry to avoid short-term views, act now and urge commerce to drive the change. All service providers should include sustainability and environmental climate change policies within their bids.

Oliver Jones, the CEO of The Asset factor, gave a very powerful and interesting view of the industry drive to a more integrated property and FM solution. He illustrated that the FM market was entering into new markets and that there were unbelievable opportunities for companies that were able to offer innovative products and services that offer an integrated property and fm solution that covers the whole 100% of organisations infrastructure as opposed to the current 10% of the operations most currently offer support on.

Peter Mclennan the head of the UCL Master degree course in Fm, gave a presentation illustrating the benefits of promoting the further education of FM’s. His statistics highlighting the increases in individual FM’s career development and remuneration were offset for companies by the large scale increases in productivity. In answering delegates questions, Peter agreed that they needed to be greater clarification as to the benefits and career opportunities for individuals in the industry to bridge the gap between operative / supervisory roles to more encompassing FM management roles. He also agreed that the was little promotion of the best organisations offering management development in FM, in the same way that Marks and Spencer and McDonalds were recognised for the quality of their training programmes.

The final speaker of the day was Guy Holden, Vice president of Johnson Controls, who gave a fascinating insight into the opportunities and difficulties of operating a company on a global basis. Guy felt although a huge challenge it was possible to be able to offer a Strategic / integrated and global offering to customers. He reviewed the vagaries of operating on a global platform including withdrawing local country Managing Directors and localised P&L accounts and running with purely a global P&L. He reviewed the difficulties of managing localised cultural differences but emphasised how technology had made the opportunity to manage on a global basis achievable. Despite the opportunists for global service delivery rapidly increasing, he warned that we should not overlook the threat of global competition. In particular he highlighted the quality of the skills employed by organisations such those possessed by staff in a company in Manila recently acquired by Johnson Controls where staff all had double degrees and spoke two to three languages.

In summarising the day John Davis the CEO of FRL, felt that the delegates had been on an interesting journey through the day and that the information from the speakers and input from the delegates themselves, would prepare them for avoiding the pitfalls, maximise opportunities and motivate to tackle the challenges of the future.
